ICFF LOOK BOOK LOUNGE:

THE NEW DESIGN HABIT

As Head of Creative at CANOA, I led the design for our Brooklyn-based practice's showcase at the 35th edition of ICFF in the Javits Center. This immersive three-day exhibition transformed the traditional product showcase model by revealing the creative journey behind commercial design.

Our ICFF showcase embodied CANOA's core philosophy: the design process deserves as much attention and appreciation as the final product. By creating a platform where interior designers, furniture brands, and design enthusiasts could gather to discuss each step of the creative journey, we demonstrated our commitment to transparency and community engagement.

Central to our exhibition was the concept of "The New Design Habit" — an acknowledgment that while design habits form the foundation of every designer's process, the rapidly evolving landscape of our industry demands we examine which habits to preserve and which to transform. Through our panel discussions and workshops, we actively explored which traditional practices might be holding the industry back and which emerging approaches might lead to more innovative, sustainable, and inclusive design outcomes.

For the 1000 square foot booth, I designed "a home away from home" focused on relatability. I curated nine complementary brands from our platform's community—ranging from established ones like Hem, Normann Copenhagen, Heartwork and RAD to smaller, independent ones like Work in Progress, iLAN iLAN, Studio Anand Sheth, Denvir Enterprises and Nodi Rugs. "I had a fun challenge with a bright yellow rug that ran throughout the space as a result of ICFF's branding and wayfinding design, so I responded with a mellow, natural-coloured palette that would balance its playfulness."

Canoa Power Users Campaign: Showcasing Design Innovation

As Head of Creative at Canoa, I led the development of a comprehensive brand awareness campaign that showcased how innovative users are transforming interior design through technology. The campaign built a genuine community around Canoa's intelligent design tools while reinforcing the brand's position in the market.

The campaign centered on a multi-faceted strategy that:

  1. Identified and highlighted power users who represent the diversity and innovation within the Canoa ecosystem

  2. Documented their unique workflows and design methodologies

  3. Created compelling narratives demonstrating the real-world impact of Canoa's technology

  4. Built community engagement through collaborative storytelling

The campaign featured five pioneering designers pushing the boundaries of what's possible with Canoa's tools. Each spotlight explored their unique approach to redesigning project management and spatial design, creating authentic narratives that resonated with the broader design community.

The project established programs to foster connections between designers, encouraging knowledge sharing and collaborative innovation. Virtual workshops, feedback sessions, and networking opportunities allowed users to connect with featured designers and each other.

The campaign articulated and strengthened Canoa's brand values through cohesive storytelling. By showcasing how their tools empower designers, the project reinforced Canoa's position as a thought leader committed to making design more accessible, connected, and innovative.

This Is America is the first exhibition co-curated by Experience design studio ADITIONS AND PR collective Hello Human. Both companies, founded by women of color, saw an opportunity to collaborate and use Milan Design Week as an international platform for discussion around diversity and representation in the design world today, a topic that unfortunately has never been broached, in this format, at Salone, the industry’s most important global event. In co-curating This Is America, they have brought together a survey of diverse voices in design, both established and emerging, in an attempt to rechart global conceptions of the term ‘American Design’ and the faces behind the industry itself. This is America is a debut group exhibition co-curated by ADITIONS & Hello Human, powered by CANOA.

Labels, whether correctly or incorrectly attached to people, identities, groups, ideas or objects are the way we as a society can begin to understand, categorize and contextualize the world around us.

Indeed, the term “American design” is a label attached to the cohort of American designers producing work today, and how they express themselves, their ideas and their work. While individuals may have a personal view on what American design is, it is a global culture that collectively labels American design, what it looks like, feels like, how it’s made, who makes it, who buys and uses it.

This is America is an opportunity for us as part of a diverse nation of designers, communicators and curators to rechart the territories, labels and previous conceptions of American design by showcasing our reflections and views of what American design is today..

About

OF THREADS is an art-design curatorial collective founded by Alma Lopez and Sergio Mondragón that celebrates the work of Mexican American designers and artists in the United States. Through their curatorial efforts, they investigate the deep connections between multiple generations, the blending of Mexican heritage and the American experience.

OF THREADS dedicates itself to expressing the multi-layered narrative, presenting them truthfully as they have been experienced, woven and interlaced like threads. Just as cultural traditions are passed down and adapted, stories of resilience, migration, and family are shared, OF THREADS seeks to recognize the totality of the Mexican-American identity via contribution within the contemporary art and design canon.

EL LISTÓN CAFÉ is an art and design group exhibition that portrays a spectrum of testimonies informed by the duality and/or communion of two worlds within a coming-of-age experience: One world is deeply rooted in Mexican heritage and culture; the other in an American childhood and adolescence.

The artistic interpretation of these personal journeys is told through a mixed array of mediums such as fashion, furniture, art, and objects by 11 California-based Mexican-American artists/designers, and curated by Of Threads' co-founders Alma Lopez and Sergio Mondragón.

About

The NODI 'UNPLUGGED' collection, a collaboration with designers ALMA LOPEZ and LIZ WERT, captures the independent spirit of the 90s reimagined for contemporary interiors. Joining forces with NODI RUGS to create the kinds of rugs that, in our view, hadn't been offered before, each piece in the collection explores how the spirit of the 90s — a time teetering on the precipice of our hyper-digital era but that gave rise to a wellspring of individual expression and retained more grounded notions of creativity — can be brought into a contemporary context. And actually, how it can thrive there.

This avant-garde collection features an offbeat palette including vibrant NEON DREAMS yellow, dramatic LICORICE with off-taupe reminiscent of television static, liberating CORNFLOWER BLUE, and grounding TERRACOTTA that challenges capitalist conventions.

Available in both standard and circular shapes, these rugs are crafted in THREADS, STRIPES, and CHECKERS patterns that push beyond minimalism to create gathering spaces that foster connection and inclusive conversation.

The UNPLUGGED collection embodies the designers' shared philosophy that spaces should be infused with joy and that life is meant to be lived fully.

Creative Director
focused on accessible,
beautiful, and creative
physical and digital experiences.

Alma Jimenez Lopez is a first-generation Mexican-American designer and multidisciplinary artist whose work celebrates her heritage and community commitment. With roots in Comonfort, Guanajuato, Mexico, and raised in Texas, Alma's practice reflects a rich interplay between heritage, identity, craftsmanship, and fine art. After earning a Bachelor's in Interior Architecture and Design from the Academy of Art University, Lopez built her career in San Francisco and now divides her time between the Bay Area and Abilene, Texas.

With over 16 years of experience in interior architecture, furniture design, and community activations, I bring a unique perspective to the intersection of spatial design, brand strategy, and cultural storytelling.

As the former Head of Creative at CANOA, I helped transform how furniture dealers, manufacturers, and designers collaborate through a technology platform that made spatial design more accessible, collaborative, and data-driven. At CANOA, I bridged the gap between traditional dealership models and the future of sustainable design, creating systems that streamlined product specification, improved supply chain transparency, and revolutionized the client experience. Prior to this, I co-founded ADITIONS, an experiential design studio specializing in custom FF&E solutions, immersive activations, and community-driven storytelling. In 2022, CANOA acquired ADITIONS, bringing me and my five-person team on board to build CANOA's creative, community, and marketing initiatives. This acquisition allowed me to apply my design expertise to reimagine the dealer-manufacturer-designer relationship, creating more efficient, sustainable, and client-centered approaches to the commercial furniture specification and procurement process.

Currently, I lead my multidisciplinary practice dedicated to helping companies foster authentic connections with communities. My expertise spans marketing, physical activations, and go-to-market strategy across the U.S. and globally, creating culturally rooted engagements that ensure genuine community connections.

I am also the co-founder of Of Threads Collective, uplifting Mexican-American designers through exhibitions like El Listón Café, which debuted at the 2025 Fog Design+Art Fair—an immersive installation exploring cultural identity through design and narrative-driven spatial experiences.

Through my studio, I create evocative works in ceramics, textiles, and furniture, collaborating with artists, brands, and institutions to amplify underrepresented voices in design. My projects across NYC Design Week, SF Design Week, SF Art Week, Milan Design Week, and installations like Temporarily Available, NZ Pavilion, and Nodi Rugs Unplugged reflect my commitment to celebrating community, fostering cross-cultural connections, and pushing the boundaries of design as a tool for storytelling and empowerment.
